Pancake Ninja: hockey

I was feeling pretty sad that most of my favorite NHL players are now out of the playoffs so I stopped at the local rink to watch recreational adult league hockey.
This kid in red on the right made my night!
Look at that leg extension, his stride is text-book correct, you can draw a straight line from his right elbow down to his left toe. If only every kid I coached could learn to skate like this…

He might be the shortest player on the ice but because of his hustle he’s winning races to loose pucks every time he steps on the ice.

Back check, fore check, pay check! And they’re going to the championship game.
Another great day for hockey.

We watched Hockey with some of my little hockey playing friends. The NHL might not be playing hockey, but lower levels of pro hockey are playing this season.

This is Eli, he’s been playing hockey for a couple of years and Pekka Rinne just might be his favorite NHL player.

The game was tied near the end of the 3rd.

Noah said he wanted to see a shootout. I agreed I’d like a shootout but I wanted to see the IceBears win if we were going to go to a shootout.

Nobody scored in overtime so we got the shoot out we wanted. Now Noah wasn’t sure this shoot out was such a good idea.

I just can’t watch

It was still tied, The IceBears shot second and they were sending their last guy...

Ricky did some kind of a Datsyuk move. He came down stickhandling on his side and faked a shot

Then he slid the puck across with the toe of his backhand

And shot backhanded. But Did he score??

YES!

Everyone was on their feet.

We won!

Photo A Day list. How to play If you want to join.

These guys came to watch their Dad play hockey. For the younger Wright, getting to drink out of Daddy’s water bottle after the game is the highlight of the day even if he still needs Mom to help him actually get any water out of the water bottle.

The older Wright is cute as a button too!

I enjoyed meeting these guys and hope I get to see them again before they’re all grown up.

Thanks for being the highlight of my morning at the rink.

Well, we score goals, fall down and get back up a lot.

We use these foam pillow-like things to divide the ice into a smaller playing area. We play with a bright blue puck that’s about half the weight of a regular black puck.

I sit on the dividers with my team and talk to them about strategy and systems or something like that.

I laugh a lot. I have no idea what is happening here. But somebody's falling and somebody already did fall.

Sneaky’s really getting good at coming in at an angle to take the puck from someone.

As she leaves she even positions her body between the puck and the guy she stole it from. Too bad it was someone on her own team she took it from.

Then for some reason, don’t ask me why after the game no matter what the score is we do a shootout. The kids all like it.

He shoots, he scores!

There are different goal celebrations.

Most opt for the classic arms raised.

Jon had been planning the knee touch and fist pump for quite some time.

Drewsy chose the Happy skate and just smiled all the way back to his bench.

Sneaky faced the crowd because she knew they were all just as happy as she was about scoring.

Others prefer to wave to Mom and Dad.

It's a great day for hockey!

It’s a lot of fun.

And that’s why we do it.

Savannah is one of “my kids” I coached this winter. We call her “Sneaky”, and she has Sneaky on her jersey. It’s a name she got from coach Bob. If you play for coach Bob you’ll likely get a name. There was the quiet boy who didn’t say much and when asked what his name was he didn’t say anything Bob said you look like a Fred, yes your name’s Fred. The boy promptly said his name, but the Fred name stuck despite his protesting.
